PayPal’s dirty money

14 Sep

PayPal says they don’t work with groups that promote hate, yet 10 dangerous anti-LGBT extremist sites are using PayPal to raise cash online.

Ask PayPal to drop these groups and put hate out of business:

Did you know that PayPal is making it easy for some of the world’s most violent anti-LGBT hate groups to raise money online to fund their hateful agendas?

One of the groups using PayPal, Abiding Truth Ministries, frequently sends their leader Scott Lively on trips to build a standing army of extremists dedicated to discriminating against LGBT people After one of these trips, Lively bragged that he delivered a “nuclear bomb against the gay agenda in Uganda.”  Just days later, his Ugandan hosts introduced the horrifying “Kill the Gays” bill.

PayPal already has a policy that prohibits use of its service “for activities that [...] promote hate, violence, racial intolerance” – but groups like Abiding Truth Ministries – and 10 others we’ve found – are falling through the cracks.

If enough of us speak up, PayPal will shut down their accounts before these groups raise even one more dollar.  Ask PayPal to put hate out of business:

www.allout.org/paypal

Once we reach 25,000 signers, we will present your demand directly to PayPal executives, asking them to cut off the accounts and ban all sites that promote anti-LGBT hate.

Over $130 million is moved across the world everyday via PayPal, the world’s most popular online payment service.  One of the things that makes PayPal amazing is that it allows legitimate charities to reach out across currencies and continents to raise money for important causes. In the wrong hands, however, this technology enables violent extremists to draw on a global base of followers for financial support.

When PayPal came under fire in the past for processing donations to white supremacist group, the Ku Klux Klan, the company did the right thing and promptly removed them. If PayPal hears us and terminates these 10 accounts, we will cut funds from ten of the most dangerous hate groups and have a real impact against homophobia worldwide.  Ask PayPal to do the right thing:

Don’t back down

25 Aug

Tell companies to stay strong and stay off of CVN.

Funding hate is more than wrong – it’s bad business.

We need your help to fight back against dishonest campaigns from extreme anti-gay groups - and we need to act quickly.

For weeks, you and other All Out members have been urging companies to cut ties with CVN (also known as CGBG) – a site that allows customers to donate a portion of their online purchases to ‘charities’ – including several anti-gay groups such as Focus on the Family (FotF) and Family Research Council (FRC). Because of our efforts, dozens of major companies have dropped off the network!

But now these groups have taken notice and they are telling their supporters to directly contact companies like Apple, Macy’s, Microsoft and Netflix and push them to re-join CVN.  These companies have come out in support of LGBT rights, but are now the targets of a powerful hate machine.

Add your name to this petition telling these companies that funding hate is more than just wrong – it’s bad business.  If we can reach 50,000 signatures from global consumers, we will deliver the petition to every major company on CVN’s platform next week.

FRC and FotF are trying to distort the facts and make corporations believe this is about marriage and attacking “Christian values” – in fact, none of our campaigns have mentioned the issue of marriage equality and many All Out members are devoted Christians as well.  Our focus has been entirely on the activities of these organizations and their attempts to oppress LGBT people around the world.

FRC is listed as a hate group by respected civil rights organization, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)1, and, along with FotF, is one of the most vocal and well-funded advocates for discrimination against gay, lesbian, and transgender people around the world.  With annual budgets of $12 million and $100 million USD respectively, FRC and FotF frequently distribute misinformation about LGBT people and lobby against hate crimes legislation, anti-bullying laws, and civil protections all over the world.

We may not have their massive budgets, but we can surface the voices of thousands of concerned consumers, gay and straight, all over the world.  Tell corporations that have come out in support of LGBT rights to stay strong and stay off of CVN:

Take a look at these 5 examples of FRC’s and FotF’s efforts to hinder equality for LGBT people:

1. Family Research Council opposes global decriminalization of homosexuality

FRC vocally condemned a recent UN resolution calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality, fearing that it would “force acceptance of the world’s gays and lesbians”.2

2. FRC directed members to pray for continued LGBT criminalization in Malawi

FRC asked it’s members to pray for countries, Malawi in particular, that have laws criminalizing homosexuality to have the courage to withstand coercion from the US to eliminate those laws.  In Malawi, homosexuality carries a sentence of corporal punishment and up to 14 years in prison.3

3. Focus on the Family lobbies against anti-bullying measures and hate crimes legislation

FotF lobbied to repeal hate crimes laws in the US and has vocally opposed anti-bullying measures in schools, claiming that gay and lesbian teens know they are “abnormal” and “have higher propensity to depression or suicide” because of it.4

4. FRC and FotF tell people to pray the gay away

Both FotF5 and FRC6 advocate widely discredited “reparative therapy” that tries to convert LGBT people into heterosexuals, and both promote the “ex-gay” movement as a way to combat civil rights measures for gays and lesbians.

5. FRC tries to make people believe that gay people are pedophiles

FRC published and republished “studies” based on discredited junk science linking homosexuality to child abuse and pedophilia and claiming “One of the primary goals of the homosexual rights movement is to abolish all age of consent laws and to eventually recognize pedophiles as the ‘prophets of a new sexual order’”.7

No room for hate

Tell Westin it’s time to cut ties with CVN.
and
2. “Like” Westin’s FB page and post the image with the comment “It’s time to stop funding hate groups through the Christian Values Network and go All Out for LGBT equality!”

Dear [internet community],
Our pressure worked!  Thanks to your support of our campaign with Change.org, Apple has joined more than 200 other companies in breaking off with CVN, the online platform that allows consumers to donate part of their purchases to “charity” – including anti-gay hate groups like Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council.
Unfortunately, many major brands are still participating.  Westin Hotels – a supporter of LGBT rights in the past – is one of the companies still on CVN.  Despite our outreach to them, letting them know about CVN’s hateful practices, they still haven’t pulled out.
So our creative team has taken the liberty of mocking up one of Westin’s recent ad campaigns – a campaign they poured more than $30M into – to show what CVN is doing to their brand.  Will you help bring Westin around by posting this image on their Facebook page?  Companies like Westin pay close attention to what people say about them on social networks.  If they see hundreds of us posting this ad parody, they’ll know they need to shape up fast.
All you have to do is:
1. Download this image (right-click on this link and choose “Save Link As”)
and then
2. “Like” Westin’s Facebook page and post the image on their wall with the comment “It’s time to stop funding hate groups through the Christian Values Network and go All Out for LGBT equality!”
Westin spent over $30M on their new ad campaign, their first in more than 5 years.  The last thing they want is for their new branding to be tarnished.  Your action will show Westin that supporting LGBT rights isn’t just a marketing tactic – it’s a necessary part of doing business responsibly.
You’ve already been instrumental in getting Apple, and more than 200 other corporations, to cut ties with CVN.  By publicly calling out Westin, we’ll be making a strong statement to all of the companies still on CVN that it’s time to go.
Thanks for all you do.
