IBM’s Watson should co-host a presidential debate, and fact-check the shit out of it in real-time.

“The problem with debates isn’t that the human moderators need computers to help them fact-check, the problem is they’re banned from fact-checking period.

Presidential debates are organized and run by the CPD, which is a corporation 50% owned by the Republican party and 50% by the Democratic party. The rules are whatever is best for those parties.

Before 1988, debates were run by the League of Women Voters, which is non-partisan, and ran non-partisan debates. So, for the ’88 election Bush and MondaleDukakis formed the CPD to be a common bloc against the LWV, to stop them from adding third-party candidates or making the debates too challenging. Eventually the LWV quit, because…

It has become clear to us that the candidates’ organizations aim to add debates to their list of campaign-trail charades devoid of substance, spontaneity and honest answers to tough questions. The League has no intention of becoming an accessory to the hoodwinking of the American public.

So since 1988 debates have been campaign-trail charades devoid of substance, spontaneity and honest answers to tough questions. Unless Watson is going to help them avoid substance more efficiently, this isn’t going to happen.”
