ProFlowers – dumped him! AOL – dumped him! AllState – dumped him! Now… Who’s next?

Rush Limbaugh Cartoon by Ian D. Marsden of mar...

You all are amazing! Hours after our first wave of emails began hitting the inboxes of ProFlowers.com, the company suspended advertisements with Rush Limbaugh. Now, the day after we switched our focus to AOL, they too have announced they will suspend funding for Limbaugh’s vitriol.

Rush has also apologized to Sandra Fluke for his choice of words, but as Sandra says, that “doesn’t change anything… this was not someone who made one accidental statement. This was three days of significant portions of his three-hour show. He insulted me and the women of Georgetown — who have received no apology – he insulted us over 53 times.”

Rush had two full days to consider the impact of his words and make amends, but last Friday — with his sponsors still by his side — he was in his third day of hurling insults at Sandra, saying “she’s having so much sex (and her buddies with her) that she can’t afford it… did you ever think about maybe backing off the amount of sex that you have?…They’re lined up around the block… Ms. Fluke, who bought your condoms in junior high? Who bought your condoms in the sixth grade, or your contraception?”

This was not “absurdity”, as Rush’s mealy-mouthed apology put it; this was a full-on assault on women who want contraceptives covered by medical care. It was an assault on a woman for daring to speak publicly about sex as a medical issue. It is a disgrace that any advertiser continues to proudly associate itself with this type of rhetoric. With advertisers falling as fast as we can target them, we are going after the final few in one fell swoop.

Tell Rush’s sponsors to stop funding his vile attacks on women.

UPDATE:  BREAKING: AOL drops Limbaugh 3/5/2012 https://www.facebook.com/aol/posts/356690557687629

Thanks to those who signed the petitions and made your voice be heard.

Hello,

Rush Limbaugh is calling women who use birth control sluts.

And that’s not all. If the women in your life want to have birth control covered in their medical plan, then Rush “wants something for it” — he wants them to record themselves having sex and then “post the videos online so we can all watch.”

The only reason this bigot is on the air is because of the millions of dollars companies pay each year for advertising on his show. Among them is internet giant AOL, which has even been offering discounts to Limbaugh’s listeners.

Use the form on the right, in this following website, to ask AOL to stand up for women and pull their ads from Rush’s show:

sumofus.org/campaigns/aol-limbaugh/?sub=taf

Limbaugh’s disgusting, hateful words specifically targeted Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke. Fluke has fought for coverage for birth control publicly on behalf of a friend at school with a medical issue that resulted in the loss of one of her ovaries — a condition that would have been entirely preventable if she had been given access to hormonal contraception.

Companies have a responsibility not to support hate speech like Limbaugh’s – and consumers like us are demanding that they stand up to him. Rush clearly recognizes the danger he’s in — yesterday he issued a mealy-mouthed “apology” excusing his behavior by saying that he has always “illustrated the absurd with absurdity.”

But those half-hearted, uninspiring words are only feeding the huge momentum that’s building to get Rush off the air. Two of his biggest advertisers, Carbonite and ProFlowers, dropped Rush after his so-called “apology” yesterday. Carbonite’s CEO said, “No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady.”

Meanwhile, AOL continues to advertise a 75% discount on its “Quick Check Diagnostic” service “exclusively for Rush Limbaugh listeners.” That’s simply unacceptable.

US: Save the Internet

17 Nov
Dear friends in the US,

Right now, Congress is debating a law that would give them the power to censor the world’s Internet — creating a blacklist that could target YouTube, WikiLeaks and even Avaaz! Now if we stand with key members of Congress, we can defeat this attempt at global Internet censorship. Click here and help build a national outcry callingfor a free and open Internet:

Right now, Congress is debating a law that would give them the power to censor the world’s Internet— creating a blacklist that could target YouTube, WikiLeaks and even groups like Avaaz!

Under the new law, our government could force Internet providers to block any website on suspicion of violating copyright or trademark legislation, or even failing to sufficiently police their users’ activities. And, because so much of the Internet’s hosts and hardware are located here in the US, their blacklist would clamp down on the free web for all of us in Americaand millions across the world.

We only have days before the vote but we can help stop this — champions in Congress want to preserve free speech and tell us that a global outcry would strengthen their hand. Let’s urgently raise our voices from every corner of America and join Avaaz members across the world to build a massive call urging our decision makersto reject the bill and stop Internet censorship. Click below to sign and then forward as widely as possible— our message will be delivered directly to key members of the US Congress ahead of the crucial vote:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_internet_us/?vl

For years, our government has condemned countries like China and Iran for their clampdown on Internet use.But now, the impact of these new censorship laws could be far worse — effectively blocking sites not only in the US but also to every Internet user across the globe.

Last year, a similar Internet censorship bill was killed before reaching the Senate floor, but it’s now back in a different form. Copyright laws already exist and are enforced by courts. But this new law goes much further — granting the government and big corporations enormous powers to force service providers and search engines to block websitesbased just on allegations of violations — without a trial or being found guilty of any crime!

Free speech advocates have already raised the alarm, and some key Senators are trying to gather enough support to stop this dangerous bill. We have no time to lose. Let’s stand with them to ensure our lawmakers preserve the right to a free and open Internet as an essential way for people in the US and around the world to exchange ideas, share communication and work collectively to build the world we want. Sign below to stop censorship, and save the Internet as we know it:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_internet_us/?vl

In the past months, from the Arab Spring to the global Occupy Movement, we’ve seen first hand how the Internet can galvanize, unify and change society. Now, if we stand together, we can stop this new attack on Internet freedom. We’ve done it before — in Brazil and Italy, Avaaz members have won major victories in the fight for a free Internet. Let’s mobilize here in the US to defeat the most powerful censorship threat that the Internet has ever seen.

With hope,

Luis, Dalia, Diego, Emma, Ricken, Aaron, Antonia, Benjamin and the rest of the Avaaz team

Urgent Message to the world. #occupywallstreet #p2

Some food for thought.

I love the idea of the general assembly, is more like a direct democracy where everyone participates in decision making. The leader our our movement is not an individual it is the people, we are all equal and can come a consensus.

At these assemblies we need to CONSIDER changes to our whole socioeconomic system, the whole of society.

Currently we are INDOCTRINATED with the concept of a monetary system and democracy. We have look at the outcomes of other socioeconomic system, (facism, socialism, and capitalism and all those other -ism’s; DO THEY WORK?) We can start from scratch look at what works, what fixes our problem, what improves our live.

We should to be open minded to new ideas. Nobody is perfect or know everything there is to know. If you believe in god only god is perfect, if you don’t know well you most likely know no one is perfect.

Consider a DIRECT DEMOCRACY, where voters vote directly for legislation. Remove politicians.Politicians have their own opinions, they are not technicians they can’t fix problems like hunger and crime. They require the knowledge and expertise of other who can.  We don’t even vote for the president, the electorate college does! At this time we know politicians are not representing the people but corporations. Whomeever has the A LOT of cash can ‘persuade’ (lobby) politicians to do their bidding.

The monetary system only creates, Social stratification (class i.e. lower middle and upper ), technological paralysis (limited technology), corruption, power and wealth consolidation (wealth gap),  labor abuse (exploitation), covert form of government dictatorship (rich rolling elite). Not to mention greed, greed, corruption, bigotry,  hate.

Currently we ask how much does it cost for a project or piece of legislation, the question should be do we have the resources. Today we have resources to house feed and educate everyone. (i.e. we can feed everyone we have the technology; check out vertical farming and hypo tonics, technology which could produce an ABUNDANT amount of healthy food.) (i.e. if we harnessed the many forms of alternative renewable resources at a much more EFFICIENT rate we would certainly be able to do without oil and gas and without ANY POLLUTION, NONE.) <<< (Technology i.e. science in application solves our problems: heater to warm building,  AC to cool rooms, light bulb for artificial light, MEDICINE, etc )

Enter a resource based economy.

In a monetary system in which the ultimate is goal is profit people can’t afford be ethical, produce abundance, be efficient or sustainable. (i.e. a sales person won’t tell you that their product is bad, even if it is. they won’t tell you of a better product even if they know there is because if they do they loose your business. PROFIT) (You cant trust a doctor because if he tells you he needs to take out a kidney you don’t know if he needs to charge for that to pay for his yacht or you really need to have your kidney remove)

Abundance, Efficiency, and sustainability decrease profit; SCARCITY increase profit. Scarcity, keeping products valuable. Sustainability and abundance don’t work in a monetary system.

TZM RESPONSE TO “OCCUPY WALL STREET”

27 Sep
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE ZEITGEIST MOVEMENT: RESPONSE TO “OCCUPY WALL STREET”

www.occupywallst.org

On Sept 17th 2011, a grassroots expression of contempt was launched in
the heart of the world’s financial center in lower Manhattan of New York
City, also commonly known to the world as the institution of “Wall
Street”. As of Sept 26th, there have been over 80 arrests and many
recorded instances of what appears to be violence and abuse coming from
the police and security forces there. However, the protesters remain
vigilant in what could very well be a landmark event that will resonate
for some time to come.

The Zeitgeist Movement would like to extend its public support to this
basic expression.

As the world awakens to a failing financial system with growing civil
unrest emerging without the bias of sovereignty, religion or political
loyalty, a new, unifying perspective is slowly taking hold which
transcends the framework many of us falsely assume as empirical to our
way of life.

With the slow grind down of the global workforce as machine automation
continues to replace human labor for the benefit of corporate cost
efficiency, simultaneously reducing purchasing power and hence
inevitably stifling so called “Economic Growth”; with the ever
expanding Debt Crisis born out of the Fractional Reserve Lending System
and the simple reality that money is created out of debt and sold as a
commodity in exchange for Interest – Interest that can only again come
onto existence through more loan sales; with the looming military
programs growing in virtually all major powers as the financial crisis,
coupled with a pending hydrocarbon energy crisis, begins to suggest a
stage of global conflict possibly never before seen; along with the
market psychology of Infinite Growth Consumption that continues to
pervade and distort our values and what it means to live in harmony with
nature on a finite planet…

…it might be time we begin to see that the social problems at hand are
not specific to any general policy, administration, or even so called
“corporate greed”. The real problem at hand is actually systematic via
the very core foundation of what defines our Economic System and the
psychology that is supported and rewarded.

The historical illusion that continues to this day is that someone or
some group is explicitly to “blame”. Rather than focus on the 400 people
who have more wealth than 150 million in America or the fact that globally
1% of the world’s population has more wealth than 40%, let’s instead ask
ourselves how such a manifestation is even possible and, more critically,
why we would expect anything less? Think about it.

After all, it’s the “Free-Market“, isn’t it? Contrary to the
statistically void efficiency assumptions made by most Market
Economists, the Free-Market simply means anyone can do whatever they
want and maximize however they want within the confines of legal
legislation; legal legislation which, make no mistake, is also for sale
in the Free-Market as well; as are political officials, regulatory
institutions and whatever social entity you wish to consider.

Nothing but maximizing monetary gain is sacred and anytime a person or
group brings some detrimental social or environmental consequence of
this system to the forefront, pejorative distinctions are usually
branded upon their forehead to stifle such concern and frighten other
detractors – such as being called a “Socialist” or “Communist”.

Furthermore, while people in protest today across the world continue to
condemn monetary influence in social dealings such as the legal reality
of Corporate Lobbying, even using such colorful terms as “Corporatism”,
Crony-Capitalism” and even “Fascism”, they seem to misunderstand what
this system is and always has been.

The Free-Market model of Economics is a haphazard, unscientific anarchy
of organization which assumes that any person or group with
enough money and hence power will be “responsible” in their actions
both socially and environmentally. The problem is that the very
definition of being “financially responsible” actually means to be
socially and environmentally exploitative, manipulative and negligent,
for the main driver of this system is Inefficiency. The more problems in
society in general, the more jobs are created and the more rich the
upper 1% become. There is an empirical decoupling from what actually
supports life and no alteration of the core configuration of the
monetary-market Incentive will likely change that.

On a different level, this system, as an historical evolution, is
actually based on a culturally hegemonic pretense. Once economic
advantage is obtained, it will likely be kept. This is why everything in
the system favors the wealthy by its general structure and inherent
logic. While the public might complain about the fact that top Hedge Fund
Managers bring in over 300 million dollars per year, they often do not find
objection with an Interest system that rewards those with high deposits
and essentially taxes those using credit. While you may buy your home
with a loan, paying thousands in interest a year, a person of wealth can
make a CD Investment and gain free interest income simply because they have
the money to spare.

Class separation and perpetuation and the growing wealth divide is not a
byproduct. It is inevitable. In the Free-Market, one is actually
“free” to take away the liberty of others through the mere economic
pressures generated from the game. You are only as free as the size of
your wallet. The term “Institution Racism” was coined by civil
rights activist Stokely Carmichael in the 1960s referring to how often
unnoticed underlying policies and structures within the social system
undermined African-American prosperity and equality. What we have today
is a mere variation: “Institutional Classicism”.

Wall Street itself, which is the ultimate manifestation of the pursuit
of money as a commodity rather than any form of true creation or social
contribution, is naturally a ripe entity for symbolic objection for, at
a minimum, it shouldn’t exist at all and most certainly not have the
grand effect it does on the stability of the global economy today,
regardless of the inherent shortcomings denoted.

However, that stated, it must again be made clear that Wall Street and
the Banking System are not the source of our problems. They are only
symptoms of an Economic System which will continue to fail by the very
gravity of its outdated and false assumptions of human conduct and
environmental relationships.

The question then becomes, what do we put in its place? ~Z

About:
The Zeitgeist Movement is a global sustainability activist group working
to bring the world together for the common goal of species
sustainability before it is too late. It is a social movement, not a
political one, with over 1100 chapters across nearly all countries.
Divisive notions such as nations, governments, races, political parties,
religions, creeds or class are non-operational distinctions in the view
of The Movement. Rather, we recognize the world as one system and the
human species as a singular unit, sharing a common habitat. Our
overarching intent could be summarized as “the application of the
scientific method for social concern.”
