Tell your senators to support immigration reform.

28 Jan

The following is from an email:

——

Have you heard the news?

Today, a bipartisan group of Senators just released their principles for an immigration reform plan to create a roadmap to citizenship for Americans without papers. [1] And tomorrow, President Obama will outline his vision for immigration reform.

For the first time in years, politicians from BOTH parties are working together on serious immigration reform plans.

Anti-immigrant extremists are in a panic and have begun flooding Congress with messages to try to kill this momentum. We can’t let this loud, anti-immigrant fringe shape the debate.

Please tell your Members of Congress: the time is NOW to create a roadmap to citizenship for all 11 million Americans without papers. Our community demands that they don’t stop until immigration reform is signed into law.

It is critical that we keep the momentum going and remind leaders that our community demands action now.

The Senate principles include a roadmap to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. without papers – this core element would protect this community from deportation and lead to full equality.

The fight is far from over. It’s up to us to keep fighting for every family, pushing for an end to the excessive and senseless enforcement practices and making sure that this roadmap to citizenship is clear, direct, and straightforward. Any proposal that makes citizenship nearly impossible or requires waiting in a generations-long line will be a non-starter.

Please tell Congress: the time for a straightforward roadmap to citizenship is now — and we demand that you deliver.

Thanks for all you do,

Adam Luna

ProFlowers – dumped him! AOL – dumped him! AllState – dumped him! Now… Who’s next?

Rush Limbaugh Cartoon by Ian D. Marsden of mar...

Image via Wikipedia

You all are amazing! Hours after our first wave of emails began hitting the inboxes of ProFlowers.com, the company suspended advertisements with Rush Limbaugh. Now, the day after we switched our focus to AOL, they too have announced they will suspend funding for Limbaugh’s vitriol.

Rush has also apologized to Sandra Fluke for his choice of words, but as Sandra says, that “doesn’t change anything… this was not someone who made one accidental statement. This was three days of significant portions of his three-hour show. He insulted me and the women of Georgetown — who have received no apology – he insulted us over 53 times.”

Rush had two full days to consider the impact of his words and make amends, but last Friday — with his sponsors still by his side — he was in his third day of hurling insults at Sandra, saying “she’s having so much sex (and her buddies with her) that she can’t afford it… did you ever think about maybe backing off the amount of sex that you have?…They’re lined up around the block… Ms. Fluke, who bought your condoms in junior high? Who bought your condoms in the sixth grade, or your contraception?”

This was not “absurdity”, as Rush’s mealy-mouthed apology put it; this was a full-on assault on women who want contraceptives covered by medical care. It was an assault on a woman for daring to speak publicly about sex as a medical issue. It is a disgrace that any advertiser continues to proudly associate itself with this type of rhetoric. With advertisers falling as fast as we can target them, we are going after the final few in one fell swoop.

Tell Rush’s sponsors to stop funding his vile attacks on women.

UPDATE:  BREAKING: AOL drops Limbaugh 3/5/2012 https://www.facebook.com/aol/posts/356690557687629

Thanks to those who signed the petitions and made your voice be heard.

Hello,

Rush Limbaugh is calling women who use birth control sluts.

And that’s not all. If the women in your life want to have birth control covered in their medical plan, then Rush “wants something for it” — he wants them to record themselves having sex and then “post the videos online so we can all watch.”

The only reason this bigot is on the air is because of the millions of dollars companies pay each year for advertising on his show. Among them is internet giant AOL, which has even been offering discounts to Limbaugh’s listeners.

Use the form on the right, in this following website, to ask AOL to stand up for women and pull their ads from Rush’s show:

sumofus.org/campaigns/aol-limbaugh/?sub=taf

Limbaugh’s disgusting, hateful words specifically targeted Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke. Fluke has fought for coverage for birth control publicly on behalf of a friend at school with a medical issue that resulted in the loss of one of her ovaries — a condition that would have been entirely preventable if she had been given access to hormonal contraception.

Companies have a responsibility not to support hate speech like Limbaugh’s – and consumers like us are demanding that they stand up to him. Rush clearly recognizes the danger he’s in — yesterday he issued a mealy-mouthed “apology” excusing his behavior by saying that he has always “illustrated the absurd with absurdity.”

But those half-hearted, uninspiring words are only feeding the huge momentum that’s building to get Rush off the air. Two of his biggest advertisers, Carbonite and ProFlowers, dropped Rush after his so-called “apology” yesterday. Carbonite’s CEO said, “No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady.”

Meanwhile, AOL continues to advertise a 75% discount on its “Quick Check Diagnostic” service “exclusively for Rush Limbaugh listeners.” That’s simply unacceptable.

PayPal’s dirty money

14 Sep

PayPal says they don’t work with groups that promote hate, yet 10 dangerous anti-LGBT extremist sites are using PayPal to raise cash online.

Ask PayPal to drop these groups and put hate out of business:

Did you know that PayPal is making it easy for some of the world’s most violent anti-LGBT hate groups to raise money online to fund their hateful agendas?

One of the groups using PayPal, Abiding Truth Ministries, frequently sends their leader Scott Lively on trips to build a standing army of extremists dedicated to discriminating against LGBT people After one of these trips, Lively bragged that he delivered a “nuclear bomb against the gay agenda in Uganda.”  Just days later, his Ugandan hosts introduced the horrifying “Kill the Gays” bill.

PayPal already has a policy that prohibits use of its service “for activities that […] promote hate, violence, racial intolerance” – but groups like Abiding Truth Ministries – and 10 others we’ve found – are falling through the cracks.

If enough of us speak up, PayPal will shut down their accounts before these groups raise even one more dollar.  Ask PayPal to put hate out of business:

www.allout.org/paypal

Once we reach 25,000 signers, we will present your demand directly to PayPal executives, asking them to cut off the accounts and ban all sites that promote anti-LGBT hate.

Over $130 million is moved across the world everyday via PayPal, the world’s most popular online payment service.  One of the things that makes PayPal amazing is that it allows legitimate charities to reach out across currencies and continents to raise money for important causes. In the wrong hands, however, this technology enables violent extremists to draw on a global base of followers for financial support.

When PayPal came under fire in the past for processing donations to white supremacist group, the Ku Klux Klan, the company did the right thing and promptly removed them. If PayPal hears us and terminates these 10 accounts, we will cut funds from ten of the most dangerous hate groups and have a real impact against homophobia worldwide.  Ask PayPal to do the right thing:
